Cofferdam example

Cofferdam sheet pile wall example with DeepEX

A sheet pile cofferdam wall example will be analyzed with DeepEX. The following data is available:

a) Soil properties: Sand, friction angle = 30 degrees, total unit weight 120 pcf, loading modulus of elasticity Eload= 300 ksf, reloading modulus of elasticity Eur = 900 ksf. Ultimate bond resistance for ground anchors 40 psi.

b) Excavation depth: 30 ft between two sheet pile walls that are constructed with a spacing of 20 ft, cantilever stage 10 ft, strut supports at 2 ft depth and 15 ft depth. Include 600 psf traffic surcharge 1 ft behind the wall for a length of 20 ft.

Objective: Design the walls and struts with allowable stress methodology and obtain a wall embedment safety factor of 1.5.

The following image shows the final cofferdam wall model with DeepXcav. The horizontal wall displacements and wall bending moments are displayed on the left and right side of each wall. The red line next to bending moments represents the design bending moment capacity of each wall.

Next we set the design standards to US allowable:

Apply US allowable settings with DeepXcav

Next, from the Analysis tab we apply 50% wall friction as a percentage of available soil friction:

Apply wall friction for cofferdam wall

Next, we will install a steel strut between the two walls and place the traffic surcharge behind the left wall:

Install strut between the cofferdam walls

We are then ready to analyze our model by pressing the Calculate button on the bottom right corner:

Initial cofferdam wall analysis results

In the initial analysis we quickly see that the wall capacity is slightly exceeded. In this case, we can optimize the wall properties by selecting an AZ-26 sheet pile. Then perform another analysis round to confirm that our optimized wall properties are adequate:
