Cantilever wall example

Cantilever wall analysis example in DeepEX

A cantilever soldier pile wall example will be analyzed with DeepEX. The following data is available:

a) Soil properties: Sand, friction angle = 30 degrees, total unit weight 120 pcf, loading modulus of elasticity Eload= 300 ksf, reloading modulus of elasticity Eur = 900 ksf.

b) Excavation depth: 15 ft, Include 600 psf traffic surcharge 1 ft behind the wall for a length of 20 ft.

Objective: Design the soldier piles with allowable stress methodology and obtain a wall embedment safety factor of 1.5.

In the initial results of the soldier pile analysis we can see major critical items in red. The minimum obtained embedment safety factor of 1.163 is obtained from the true FS Mobilized passive (mobilization of available passive resistance from non-linear analysis). Since the system appears to be overstressed we explore the option to include active and passive wall friction within the analysis. In this case, we will assume that wall friction is 50% of the available soil friction.

We then reanalyze the excavation and obtain the new results. We then select to optimize the wall properties and change the wall section to W24x62.

Optimized cantilever wall properties with DeepXcav

The passive safety factor in this case becomes close to 2, so we will change the wall length to 33ft and reanalyze the excavation. In this last analysis we obtain a limit-equilibrium analysis wall embedment safety factor of 1.5 while other safety factors are greater.
