Lateral Earth Coefficients and Soil Pressures Methods in DeepEX

A. Introduction


DeepEX includes several lateral active and passive earth coefficient calculation procedures (Rankine, Coulomb, Caquot-Kerisel and Lancelotta). The software has an automatic procedure that selects the most suitable method for the Ka and Kp calculations, taking into consideration several project parameters (horizontal or inclined soil surfaces, use of wall friction, seismic effects). In the rare case that the Ka and Kp values cannot be captured from conventional methods (i.e. in the case of very complex soil inclinations), then we provide the option to the user, to define the Ka and Kp values manually. In this case, a totally horizontal model should be considered, without the use of wall friction. This manual mode can be used only in the Non-Linear analysis method.

In DeepEX, we have implemented many methods for the calculation of horizontal soil pressures both in cantilever excavations and in models with multiple support levels. Active, Passive and Apparent Pressure diagrams (FHWA, Peck, Custom Trapezoidal, Two-Step Rectangular, Adaptive, WMATA and more) can be assigned and used in different construction stages. This option allows us to check different methods really fast and make comparison studies.
